I have had on my mind for some time the want for new clothes verses the need for new clothes. I shop because i very much enjoy it. The scouring the rails, the online browsing the buzz from purchasing that new outfit all thrills me. But its like an addiction. Each week i fInd myself needing/wanting to buy something new, adding more and more to my ever growing wardrobe. A few pieces added due to weight loss and need for new jeans is understandable, but the constant dress buying? The need for new knitwear? Its excessive. SO…

I want to try something i have never done before.

I am inflicting a 100 day shopping ban on myself.

Firstly, the money i save will, obviously, be wonderful. I want to put this towards a number of trips for us to have as a family this summer. I can’t afford new clothes every week and trips in the summer. Priorities.

Secondly, i do not  need anymore clothes. I probably have enough clothes to wear a different outfit for everyday of the year. I have favourites that i often stick to, and i have some great re-mixable pieces. I want to really get in to using what i already have rather than always buying something new and getting a buzz from that. I want to feel fabulous in my existing clothes and how clever i can be with making new outfits out of old pieces.

I have to say i am actually a bit nervous. Shopping is my hobby, and i thoroughly enjoy it too. But where does the purchasing stop, does it ever? I feel a bit wasteful right now as i don’t get enough wear out of what i already own. Some pieces are worn once then shunned to the back of the wardrobe never to see the light again, this is just wasteful and a bit shameful 🙁

So i am going to go 100 days without clothes shopping (my shopping ban isnt on food and essentials…obvs, just clothes and accessories ) I have a couple of exceptions which i am allowing myself.

1. lingerie. Needs must girls and i currently do need some upgrades so that will be something i will allow some purchases of.

2. Makeup/hair stuff, if i need it then i will allow myself to buy some products. What i do plan on doing is running down/using completely any current products i have( ie use all shampoo then buy new rather than having 3 different ones on the go because you like a change of smell, lol, anyone else do this?!)

3. If companies would like to send me samples i will happily accept these, because who doesnt love free stuff?!

And that is it.

Anyone who wants to join in, (which would be awesome!! we can make a little #100dayshoppingban group and encourage one another and help when we feel weak!) please let me know in the comments below and we can link up once weekly here on RTH. Or gimme a tweet @RachelTheHat and let me know.

Even if we only make it half way, to me this would be amazing. I am hoping to do this. I have pretty good will power once my mind is set and this would be a great achievement on so many levels (better for the bank balance, better for the environment!)

Just lastly i have to say a big thank you to Persunmall for the lovely package i received just after Christmas. I chose myself a few gorgeous products including this Blue Knit Dress which i absolutely adore.. this blue is definitely a favourite of mine this winter! Its a great textured knit (all be it a bit short), but makes for a great tunic style with leggings, perfect for throwing on and doing the school run or even popping out for lunch. Im in love. Now to remix this bad boy of the next couple of months, yay!!

That top is lovely! And a shopping ban sounds like a good idea once in a while! I'm also one who really enjoys shopping, but I don't like spending money, so those two seem to balance each other out fairly well!

  2. January 6, 2014 / 12:25 am

I wish you well with your shopping hiatus. I am in the same boat. I shop for fun, but really need for nothing. I'll join you in your hiatus from shopping. My one exception may be some new clothes for yoga.

I think I need this ban. I say this as I have like 12 different tabs open, all linking to something I want to buy online! Is window shopping ok?! 🙂

    • January 6, 2014 / 9:32 pm

I love window shopping and pinning to my boards so that's totally ok!! Just no parting with the old £$ for 100 days 😉 (nearly 99 already haha!) Tweet me @rachelthehat with the hashtag #100dayshoppingban and we can count down all together xx

  4. January 6, 2014 / 1:09 am

I am in, I have no question gone overboard lately and based on the amount I just got for Christmas ( and out after Christmas trip) I do not need anything else. Also going to need to be more inventive on posts if I can not add shopping ones in so this may be a good thing.

    • January 6, 2014 / 9:35 pm

Me too Linda, I have treated !yaelf one to many times over this festive period! No more!! Shopping posts aren't too bad (as long as youre not parting with the cash!) Window shopping is totally allowed, all be it rather tempting. But yep let's do this! Tweet me @rachelthehat with the hash tag #100dayshoppingban and we can all chat and help each other! Xx

  5. January 6, 2014 / 1:09 am

I completely relate to you, and admire you for doing this! It's so hard to start a shopping ban when shopping is so fun. But it's such an awesome chance to save lots of money and wear clothes you've forgotten about 🙂 Good luck!!

You are stunning! I love that blue on you. I definitely should participate in the 100 day shopping ban – I spent way too much last year on unnecessary things. I need to work this year on donating a lot of it and restyling what I keep. You are an inspiration and I hope I can work on doing the same and saving some $$$.

    • January 6, 2014 / 9:37 pm

Come join us lovely! I too spent waaaay to much last year on i-dont-know-what-crap, lol . new year, new starts I say. Tweetme @rachelthehat with hashtag #100dayshoppingban so we can all support each other xx

  9. January 6, 2014 / 6:42 am

I'm in. For exactly the same reasons as you, too many dresses and other things to buy! I may make an exception for a swimsuit but that's it! xx

    • January 6, 2014 / 9:38 pm

  10. January 6, 2014 / 1:27 pm

I did something like this for Lent last year and it's a very good thing. That said, I'm not going to do anything official now as I want to try and do it in an understated way so I don't feel too desperate! X

  11. January 6, 2014 / 3:16 pm

Love your blue top! And I really love the idea of a shopping ban. I have already decided that for lent, I am giving up clothes shopping. I'm so guilty of buying things, wearing them once and then forgetting about them. It's going to be hard but good! Good luck girl!

  12. January 6, 2014 / 9:11 pm

You are a brave and awesome woman Rachel! I totally want to join you in this challenge! I will just allow myself to spend my Christmas money/gift cards in the next couple weeks, but after that, I am all yours on this challenge! (I totally would've spent this $$ already, but have been laid up at home with a horrific sinus infection)

    • January 6, 2014 / 9:40 pm

Yay good on you ashlea! We can all support each other. Gift cards are totally fine, after all they are gifts. Tweet me @rachelthehat with #100dayshopingban and we can all support each other xxx ps hope your feeling better sweetie !!

  13. January 6, 2014 / 10:16 pm

Good luck, Rachel! I'd done a similar challenge a year ago (6 months no shopping) and it did wonders for me and my attitude about shopping, consumerism, and my style. You can do it! <3

  14. January 7, 2014 / 1:05 pm

Good luck! I buy far too many clothes but have eased off slightly recently so hopefully that trend will continue through this year!

  15. January 8, 2014 / 8:44 am

A friend of mine attempted to do a year of now shopping last year…and failed! I think 100 days is a lot fairer, the end date is a lot closer so I hope you succeed!

  16. January 9, 2014 / 5:17 am

Good luck with your shopping ban! I'll basically be banned from buying anything for the undetermined future due to having an unpaid internship this semester. I'm sure you'll be able to remix a lot of your wardrobe though!

I really love this blue dress you picked out. It's so cute and I actually really love the length on you. It looks great with those leopard print heels.

  17. January 9, 2014 / 5:46 pm

  19. January 15, 2014 / 2:58 am

Love this dress and clutch! Good luck on your shopping ban! I've done that before too and am about due for another one now that I've moved and have less closet space, I should really stop buying more to put in there haha

  20. January 25, 2014 / 9:50 pm

I've thought about this A LOT. …. and today (Jan 25th) I pledge with you to participate and support you in a #100dayshoppingban, until April 5, 2014 !!! (while thinking …..OH MY GOODNESS WHAT AM I SAYING).

I WANT TO SUCCEED! I want to style everything I own before I replace it with something newer, especially because it may not even be better! I will shop my closet and save money. And who knows, maybe through this experience there will even be a little self discovery going on.

    Thanks for this!!
