My Spring 2016 Capsule.. The Grand Unveiling

spring capsule

Leading on from yesterday, here it is in all its glory.
My extremely well thought out (to the point of obsessive) Spring 2016 Capsule wardrobe.
The full run through. (As most of my pieces were already owned I have used either the same or similar)

Here goes:

Knitwear

Tops
18&19. White and Orange Camisole

Bottoms

Dresses/Jumpsuit

Coats/Jackets
33. Red Motto Jacket

Shoes

45 In total

Now full disclaimer, I am still working out a dew kinks and the past few days have seen minor pangs of panic, mostly down to what coat to wear as it's still bloody freezing, it is in-fact hail stoning as I type..
But I'm just going to roll with it and see how it goes.
I started on April 1st and have and will continue to document each outfit on instagram (follow along here)

As i mentioned yesterday there are a couple of things I may purchase replacements of, and am currently looking to replace my trench as its rather snug (bursting at the seems and unflattering more like), and yet I know it will be an integral part of my capsule.
I have to say its the one thing you don't see on other capsules, coats. But needs must here in lil ol' Wales, and to leave the house without a coat is just plain silly.
A gorgeous day can very quickly change in to a down pour, so yehhh. Coats are a necessity.

Couple of other things I wanted to mention.

  • I often work with brands. I love to promote great companies and work with new styles. It's part of what i do here, and seeing as that is in part my job, i don't what to neglect that. If I have the opportunity to work with a brand I will style the piece and mark it as LOOKBOOK, that way you will know what is for and you will hopefully still enjoy, after all we're not all doing the capsule, so hopefully this will appeal to all. I will then squirrel it away and keep aside for my next potential capsule.
  • I will allow myself to change 3 things IF the weather gets incredibly warm (which may be a switch of knitwear, or some sandals, and should be to things i already own.).
  • I also just wanted to be clear that I haven't just thrown everything out, that would be wasteful and defeating the object slightly. I have sold/given away anything that I know isn't for me, and then gotten it down to just pieces I really do like. I have stored it all away in the attic for future capsules (uh..hopefully).
  • Blog posts, will hopefully continue in the same vein, but I shall be doing more specialised posts, i.e This Friday will be about the Denim Dress. I will also be doing weekly round-ups of what I have worn and how i've worn it that week, they will probably just be phone snaps from Instagram, but i want to document this capsule as much as possible, including any highs and lows and my feelings along the way.
  • Oh and #Passion4Fashion linkup will continue as usual.. Yay!
So there we have it!
My first capsule.
I am excited!

I really hope you'll come along for this simplifying journey and enjoy reading about my experience.
If you have any questions, by all means hit me up in the comments or on twitter @RachelTheHat.
45 down from hundreds and hundreds.
#RtHCapsuleWardrobe.. Bring it on!

Ps Quite a few of the pieces in my capsule are from Shopbop.
It's been my privilege to work with them and i can honestly say they are a great company to order from and work with.
They have an amazing 25% off at the moment with the code INTHEFAM
I know! 25% is freakin' awesome. I bagged my Levi's and Zoe Karssen sweater and feeling rather smug!

  1. Always wanted to try a 'capsule' wardrobe but have put it off..... just chicken I think! Maybe this will encourage me. I have recently discovered your blog and have enjoyed going back over your past posts and watch your style evolve.

    1. Oh thanks Wendy, lovely to "meet" a new reader. And wow you were in for a treat with my archives LOl! My style has changed immensely over the years. But its been a fun journey and i'm finally in a really happy place, which i think helped enable the whole capsule thing.
I think if you fancy a capsule you should try it, i know it's sounds silly, but what's the worst that could happen? So you add in another item here or there? No biggy. But for me so far its been such a wonderful freeing experience!

  2. Just catching up on this Rachel and I'm really excited to see how you get on. Brave lady. Can I ask, does this include holiday wear (especially if you're going abroad) and what about occasion wear? Are these separate to your 45 pieces? I'd love to give it a go but I know I'll fall down at the first hurdle because 42 pieces would be made up of jackets ha ha x

    1. Hi Lovely! Brave? More like bloody stupid haha!
But so far so good, granted its only been one week LOL! But, even though its less clothing options bizarrely i actually feel more free. It's like it's taken out all the over thinking i put in to getting dressed each morning. Where i would stand there for ages just trying to think of what to wear it's just all there in front of me, and yes the outfits may not be 'groundbreakin-fashion' lol, but they're what i'm happy and comfy in, which is always good.
My particular capsule doesn't include holiday wear as i'm not going away this season (mine is just a spring capsule), so i would probably do a separate holiday capsule too if i were lucky enough to be off somewhere lovely.
Also, alas, my life doesn't involve many fancy doo's, but i know your's does, so I probably wouldn't include function/fancy wear in mine as it's more of a daily wears capsule if that makes sense. I have actually kept out one fancy dress as a just in-case.
And i am totally with you, jackets are my downfall.. I have so many and i love them all! I think that will be the one thing i miss the most: the jacket variations! But i have got a handful in there to tie me over!

  4. Ooh! Excited to see how you get on with the capsule wardrobe Rachel! I attempted this about a year ago, I can already see that you are going to have a lot more success than me! You are so organised, your guide here looks brilliant and I think the capsule really suits your more classic sense of style! Unfortunately I like to flirt with fashion a bit too much which is a stumbling block here for me! I also found the fact that our seasons aren't that defined in this country makes it hard to have the right pieces in your capsule at any one time, that said I learned some very valuable lessons from doing it! These days I make sure that everything I add to my wardrobe is on a one in, one out basis, I will still resort to eBaying if there is something specific and a little out of my budget that I want to buy but these days I have a much better idea of what suits me and my lifestyle! I am looking forward to seeing how you get on and if there is anything else I can learn! Michelle xx

    1. Michelle i love your style, there are so many pieces i see on your IG and blog that it totally swoon for!
The undefined seasons here are the one thing that makes me nervous about this. I'm already missing my vast coat selection, which is a necessity here in wales. But, one week in and so far i'm loving the freedom of thought it brings. You go to the wardrobe of a morning and its just so simple to put an outfit together, which is so refreshing after years and years of over thinking lol!

  5. Great project! I really like the pieces in your capsule. Just followed you on IG and am looking forward to your outfits! I've always been fascinated by a capsule wardrobe (and in a way I probably pretty much have a capsule wardrobe when I think about what I actually wear...). But actually doing it is still a bit scary... Anyway, it'll be great seeing what you are wearing every day! :-)

    1. Hi Andrea, so lovely to have you following along. I was the same, what i wear was capsule size once you took out all the stuff i didnt actually wear. Now i stand there every morning to be faced with all the items i love.
I think it's the thought of having the other pieces taken away and the 'just incase' situation where you think that certain top/dress would be perfect. But, scariness aside its actually so refreshing to have a small selection.. well so far anyway ;) shall keep you posted!XX

  7. Looks like the perfect capsule wardrobe to me, although I've noticed a lack of boots (other than the ankle boots). Don't you ever wear knee high boots? If I lived in Wales, I'd probably live in knee high boots lol!
