Lets Talk Haircare: Six Ways to Protect Your Hair During the Summer

Summer is that magical time when we get to explore minimalistic fashion, use our patios to their full potential and go on as many holidays as possible. Summer also has the ability to damage our hair and skin if we're not careful.

While taking care of your skin can be pretty straight forward (cut back on the make up, wash your face regularly and lather on the sunscreen), hair is a little different. We don't naturally think that we need to protect our hair when hitting the beach or park or realize that the wind is damaging it--but we so should!

Here are six tips you can incorporate into your hair care routine to make sure that your hair is still shining even in the intense August heat.

1. Deep Condition:
Hair dries out so much more easily in the summer, which makes it much more likely to frizz when the humidity steps in (eek don't i know it). Keep your hair nourished and moisturised by using doing a weekly deep conditioning treatment. Be careful not to over deep condition though, as it will ultimately build up in your hair and weigh it down.

2. Leave-In Conditioners with UV
While you can't use a deep conditioner every day, you can apply a leave-in conditioner with UV protector in it after every shower. This will help protect your hair and scalp from sun damage and burns. Be sure to apply when your hair wet so that it can actually soak in.

3. Limit your Blow Drying
Blow drying your hair and using heated styling tools damages your hair any time of year, but it causes substantially more damage in the summer when your hair is dry and fragile. Try to limit your heated hair styling to 4 days a week. Either go skip a day in between washes or combine towel drying with curling spray. I am a huge fan of this! Air dry and scrunch is a definite go to for hair for me in the summer

4. Wash out Pool and Sea Water Immediately:
Chlorine and salt water can dye our hair and deposit harsh chemicals and sediment into it. They both have the ability to strip away our hair's natural nutrients, so be sure to wash your hair immediately after swimming. Use a detangler spray post shower to carefully work through the knots that swimming may have caused.

5. Wear Loose Fitting Hats:
Hats can weaken your hair when worn too often, but they can also be a great option when lingering out in the sun for an extended period of time. Get a stylish beach hat that protects your hair and face from the sun or tuck your hair up into a baseball hat. This will help your hair from drying out or fading in the sun.

6. Get a Hair Cut:
Finally, finish your summer off with a hair cut from a great salon like Rush. Regular hair cuts are essential to maintaining healthy hair as they help you shed your split ends.
